Old World Charm in Birregurra

With a striking sense of nostalgia, wander the streets of Birregurra to feel transported back to the 19th century. Affectionately known as ‘Birrie’, this town has a magnetic pull for culture vultures and foodies alike. With carefully restored shop facades on Main Street and historic landmarks, a trip to this village is well worth the short 10-minute drive from Bluestone Fields

 Birregurra’s history

The town of Birregurra dates back to the 1860s, though it’s since moved from Birregurra Creek to its current location just by Barwon River. Take the Heritage Walk if you’re keen to brush up on your history and find out a bit more about the local sites. Just stop by the Visitor Information Centre to pick up one of their helpful brochures. 

One of the most beautiful buildings is the Anglican Christ Church, an early English gothic style church, built in 1870 from local Mount Gellibrand bluestone. The Native Youth Hotel, on Main Street, originally a Cobb & Co coaching station, dates back to 1860 as well.

It’s worth stopping by Tarndwarncoort Homestead too. This heritage sheep farm is an entrancing piece of local history, owned by the same family since 1840. If you call ahead, you might arrange a tour of the bluestone homestead. Or simply pop by to browse the craft wool offerings, from raw fleece to knitted yarn, all grown right onsite.

Birregurra’s Festivals

If you’re lucky enough to visit in October, make sure to stop by at the Birregurra Weekend Festival. This has all the trappings of a great day out with music, art, markets and abundant farm food. There are also smaller summer markets held on the second Sunday of every month from December to April with local crafts and produce.

All year round there are plenty of galleries, book shops and gift shops to dip in and out of too. And, of course, plenty of gourmet delights to keep you going.
